During his many years at the Scarborough Hospital Dr. Mandelbaum has welcomed scores of family practice residents into his office and operating room. He takes special pleasure and pride in assisting in the education of these young doctors, introducing them to surgery and helping to give them the confidence to step into practice. Here are what some of his students had to say.
Dr. Mandelbaum was one of the preceptors at Scarborough Family Medicine Residency Program. He was always kind, energetic and professional. He understood what family medicine residents needed to gain in our general surgery rotation and made learning fun and applicable. I enjoyed learning from and working with Dr. Mandelbaum!
Dr. Jing Cao
My time spent with Dr. Mandelbaum was one of the most interesting rotations during my residency.
Dr. Mandelbaum was an excellent teacher, who always explained the finer points of his specialty and provided wise guidance regarding patient care. Even after more than a decade since this rotation, in my own practice I incorporate many of the lessons I learned from him. I am grateful for his
mentorship and for his inspiring attitude and approach towards patient care.

Making the office a welcoming and comfortable place to deliver care and work has been a priority and to this end Dr. Mandelbaum has covered the wall with many beautiful pieces of work. One of the favourite things he likes to hear from patients are compliments on the art work.
There are four landscape photos in the office that were taken by an artist named Mark Brodkin. Dr. Mandelbaum met Mark a number of years ago at the mid summer outdoor art fair at city hall, and he immediately recognized the beauty and comfort that could be shared with our office patients.
There is one colourful work by the award winning landscape painter Gordon Harrison. He carries on the interpretation and celebration of Canadian landscapes in the mode of the Group of Seven.
Although not represented in the office, Christian McLeod is a leading young Canadian artist who paints in a bold abstract style on canvas. In his own words he “...operates in that gap between abstraction and representation, between the bird’s-eye view and the microscope.” Dr. Mandelbaum has many works by Christian in his home and encourages all to take a look.
Hanging on the wall in Dr. Mandelbaum’s office is a paddle created by Natasha Wittke. Inspired by an incredible canoe journey she founded Norquay as a vehicle to express her artistic appreciation of the land.
Above his desk is a work by Sean Schuster. Dr. Mandelbaum wandered into his studio in Victoria a couple years ago and was immediately enchanted by Rip Curl, as well as his other fine pieces. The wave can be simultaneously calming and exhilarating.

Sadly, the covid virus has affected many people very severely. Many have died, many have been ill and many have had their employment severely curtailed. Among the people affected are Toronto’s musicians, many of whom have no work at all. The Orbit Room is a famous club downtown that has nurtured some of Toronto’s finest players and was forced to close its doors. It’s owner, Tim Notter, is working on a revival for when covid fades away and we can enjoy each other’s company once again and appreciate the artistry of the many talented people in our city. Below is a link to a gofundme campaign for the Orbit Room.
